Sonoma, CA
The Sonoma Botanical Garden, a serene 47-acre oasis, is set to undergo a transformative phase under the leadership of its new Executive Director, Jeannie Perales. As highlighted in a recent Sonoma News article, Perales brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the garden, aiming to expand its audience and programming.
Jeannie Perales: A Passion for Gardens and Education
Perales, an alumna of Florida State University and the University of Colorado, Denver, has an extensive background in anthropology, communications, and educational psychology. Her previous roles at renowned institutions like the Denver Art Museum, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens have equipped her with the skills to manage collection-based organizations, akin to botanical gardens.
Her love for gardens was cultivated during her tenure at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Perales sees gardens as outdoor classrooms, perfect for fostering connections and education. "As an educator, the garden is like an outdoor classroom. It is a great place to connect with others,” she remarked.
A Vision for the Sonoma Botanical Garden
Perales aims to "set the course, articulate the vision and bring people along with you." With plans to host more exhibitions that showcase botanical wonders, she envisions the garden as a hub of activity and learning. Her innovative ideas include hosting live music, movie nights, and potentially renting out spaces for private events.
The garden, founded in 1987 by Jane Davenport Jansen, boasts a rich collection of Asian plants. Visitors can experience the contrast between the golden California natives and the lush green Asian woodland, complete with a lily pond and grass amphitheater. Perales hopes to bridge the gap between these botanical treasures, enhancing the visitor experience.
A Bright Future Ahead
With the garden working on creating its own wine label and plans to host more events, the future looks promising. Perales's vision aligns with the garden's ethos of discovery, education, and connection. As she aptly puts it, her goal is to "activate the space and bring it to life.”
